MagTrim™ Advanced Slitting Technology

GL&V’s new MagTrim™ slitter positioning system is based on linear servo motor technology. A complete repositioning of slitters, regardless of number, can be completed in less than 5 seconds and often in less than 3 seconds. Virtually no moving parts translate to minimal maintenance. GL&V supplies the MagTrim equipment in horizontal as well as vertical sheet run versions. All manufacturers’ top slitter holders can be accommodated. GL&V’s engineering group routinely performs “system design engineering” to integrate new equipment into the existing production line as well as into standard new automated machines we supply. GL&V is committed to supplying value-added solutions to its clients in the paper industry. GL&V not only seeks innovative products such as the MagTrim design, but also approaches every request as unique and applies the most cost effective solution to fit the situation.

GL&V’s new MagTrim™ slitter positioning system is based on linear servo motor technology. A complete repositioning of slitters, regardless of number, can be completed in less than 5 seconds and often in under 3 seconds. Position accuracy is better than 0.1mm (.004 in). This represents the best speed and accuracy available in the industry. The absolute position feedback technology used means there is never a need to “home” slitter, even after power has been removed.

MagTrim Slitter Positioning technology eliminates all moving parts. This means there are no shafts, couplings, gearboxes, belts, pulleys or bushings and there are no proximity switches/ sensors used for the positioning function. GL&V’s MagTrim system is defined by three key technologies: • Linear Servo Motors • Absolute Position Feedback • Positive Pressure Environment.

The Absolute Position Feedback requires no physical contacting parts that might wear. Aside from no wearing parts to degrade accuracy there is never a need to “re-zero” the system. If a band is reground, as with any system, the control will need to relearn the offset of the newly ground cutting edge. There is a method provided to do this which can be completed from the position of the slitter in question and requires less than 30 sec.

Positive Pressure Environment, protects all the positioning equipment from not only the paper dust in the area but also from any possible damage or abuse that may be present. The linear bearings and tracks which guide the units, the linear servo motors, the absolute feedback system and all cabling and hoses are within the positively pressurized slitter beam. This not only protects these components but also presents an exterior that is easier to clean and maintain. GL&V supplies the MagTrim equipment in horizontal as well as vertical sheet run versions. All manufacturers’ top slitter holders can be accommodated.

Dear Sirs,

The MagTrim™ slitter system has met all expectations and then some. Positioning the slitter does take about 5 seconds or so and seems to be very accurate. I have not done a lot of roll measuring but much better [than] the tape measure that was the norm of the past. We have had very few, if any, issues with the positioning drives and no problems with the positioning feedback.
If you have any questions feel free to give me a call.
